Water Pouring Through the Ceiling? Attic Burst Pipe Emergency Checklist
Step 1: Halt the Water Flow Immediately
A severed 3/4-inch pressurized supply line releases 10 to 15 gallons of water per minute. Locate your street meter box or house shutoff valve and turn the quarter-turn brass ball valve clockwise. If the valve is stiff, use a meter key or adjustable wrench.
Open lowest-level exterior garden spigots to bleed residual pressure and drain remaining water out of the lines rather than onto your ceilings.
Step 2: Relieve Ceiling Pressure to Prevent Collapse
Drywall sheets become extremely heavy when saturated with hundreds of pounds of water and wet blown-in insulation. If you notice a ceiling bulge, place large buckets underneath and puncture the center with a screwdriver or nail.
This controlled drainage prevents the entire sheetrock panel from giving way suddenly and causing catastrophic interior destruction.
Step 3: Document Evidence for Your Adjuster
Take time-stamped video and high-resolution photos of active leaks, soaked furniture, and the burst pipe connection before any cleanup begins. Keep the broken pipe fitting; insurance adjusters frequently examine physical plumbing fractures to confirm sudden and accidental failure.
